The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
